THE NIKE METCON
A brief history of the iconic Nike Metcon series.
2015
METCON 1
Nike’s first-ever Metcon dropped in January 2015 and instantly electrified the CrossFit world. This shoe set a new benchmark for “do‑everything” trainers, and excitement peaked when Games athlete Josh Bridges was spotted tearing around a track in an unbranded pair fueling wild speculation long before the shoe went to market. As the CrossFit Games approached, a new rule was implemented that restricted athletes from wearing any shoe but the Reebok Nano. This prompted Nike to put up billboards outside the venue saying "Don't Ban Our Shoe. Beat Our Shoe."
2016
METCON 2
A year later, Nike fine‑tuned that winning formula. The silhouette stayed familiar, but Nike added a slick TPU heel clip that lets athletes slide effortlessly up the wall during handstand push‑ups.
2017
METCON 3
After subtle changes with the Metcon 2, Nike dialed up a new version of the Metcon in 2017. With a lighter mesh upper and reshaped outsole, this shoe became the face of CrossFit.
2018
METCON 4
Early 2018 ushered in the Metcon 4 and the upgrade was all about durability. Nike sprinkled a textured “haptic” TPU print across a new two‑layer mesh upper and tweaked the heel counter to give a more secure fit.
2019
METCON 5
The Metcon 5 stirred up more debate than any version before it. Much of the controversy centered on the revamped design, particularly the extended rope guard which climbed noticeably higher up the sidewall and sparked strong opinions across the CrossFit community.
2020
METCON 6
The Nike Metcon 6 earned its reputation as one of the best Metcons built thanks to its ultra-breathable mesh upper, customizable heel height via the HyperLift insert, and a near-perfect blend of flexibility, lightness, and lifting stability.
2021
METCON 7
The Nike Metcon 7 delivered a performance-focused redesign, pairing Romaleos-like stability for heavy lifts with added comfort from a React foam midsole. It also introduced a high medial rope guard - an aggressive feature that would be scaled back in the next version.
2022
METCON 8
With the Metcon 8, Nike introduced a revamped upper touted as their most breathable and durable yet. The update also featured an improved lace lock system and the removal of the upper medial rope guard for a sleeker, more streamlined design.
2023
METCON 9
Nike doubled down on durability and stability, an upgrade welcomed by heavy lifters, though some fans missed the flexibility of earlier models. One of the most notable changes was the introduction of a wider toe box. Nike also reintroduced the higher rope guard on the medial side, much to the dissatisfaction of some.
2025
METCON 10
The Metcon 10 is lighter, more responsive, and more versatile than ever. A wider forefoot, ReactX cushioning, and better flex make it stable for lifts and smooth for cardio. A new lace-lock system and retooled rope wrap add grip and security without bulk. Is it perhaps the most balanced Metcon yet?
