Nike Free x Metcon
The Nike Free x Metcon originated from a simple idea: take the best of two of Nike’s most successful performance shoes and combine them into one: the flexible, natural feel of the Nike Free and the stability and durability of the Nike Metcon. First released in April 2018, it was built for athletes who craved a true hybrid trainer capable of handling everything from dynamic movements to heavy lifts.
2019
Nike Free x Metcon 2
The second version didn’t change the formula, it refined it. Nike focused on improving structure and durability, giving the shoe a more secure feel during workouts. It still leaned flexible and versatile, but with better containment under movement. While it didn’t fully win over the lifting crowd, it became a more dependable option for general training.
2020
Nike Free Metcon 3
This was the true turning point. Nike overhauled the design with a larger midsole, wider heel platform, and more aggressive flex grooves. The result was a shoe that felt more stable under load while still allowing natural movement up front. It looked like a completely different model and performed like one too, pushing it firmly into “legit training shoe” territory.
2021
Nike Free Metcon 4
The Free Metcon 4 built on that momentum by adding structure where it mattered most. A more supportive upper improved lockdown, while durability upgrades made it more reliable for demanding workouts. It still wasn’t a max-effort lifting shoe, but it became a trusted daily trainer for a wide range of athletes.
2023
Nike Free Metcon 5
This is where everything came together. The Free Metcon 5 hit the sweet spot between comfort, breathability, and stability, making it one of the easiest training shoes to recommend. As workouts shifted toward more hybrid styles, this model fit perfectly: capable in the gym, comfortable enough for everything around it.
2024
Nike Free Metcon 6
The Free Metcon 6 focused on refinement. Nike didn’t change the identity, they improved the experience. With better airflow, subtle stability tweaks, and a more comfortable fit right out of the box, it became a more polished version of what people already trusted. By now, the formula was proven.
2026
Nike Free Metcon 7 (Launching April 2)
The Free Metcon 7 is a full upgrade built for more control and performance. A new webbed lacing system replaces Flywire for a more secure, locked-in fit, while enhanced midfoot containment improves stability during lifts and lateral movement. Updated flex grooves deliver more dynamic movement, and added toe and sidewall durability increase toughness. It’s a stronger, more responsive version of the 6, built to handle more, everywhere.
